Companies F-4 and D-1

USMA Class of 1998, Companies F-4 and D-1

Born and raised in Spenser, Iowa, John graduated from Spencer High School in 1994 where he wrestled and earned an appointment to United States Military Academy at West Point.

John went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from West Point, where his ability to understand the complex and make it simple was well-known, and he was fondly remembered as being an amazing athlete, kind, incredibly bright, and always ready to help others.

John was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a Signal Corps officer until late 2001. Following his service in the Army, John attended both the McCombs School of Business to earn his MBA, and the University of Texas to earn a master’s in Finance and Information Management in 2003.

John used his extraordinary skills and knowledge in a variety of financial analyst roles with Capital One and others before working as a Data Scientist with USAA for five years and Data Analyst Manager with JP Morgan for ten years. His coworkers respected him for his work ethic and intelligence, but most importantly, for his humor and kindness to others.

Despite his love for numbers and data, John’s true love was his wife Regina who he married in 2012, and his daughter Hazel. An amazing husband and father, he was always focused on spending quality time together and enjoying the simpler things in life such as walks, trips, goofy antics and playing with their dog, Annie.

Outside of his family and work, John is best known for his love of sports and poker. Whether it was sharing his Dad’s passion for cheering for the Oakland A’s, watching Texas Longhorn football, or even competing in The World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and other events, John was an avid fan.

John passed after a short and tragic battle with stage 4 T-Cell lymphoma cancer after going to see the doctor for the flu and pneumonia. He is survived by his wife, Regina, and daughter Hazel.

A memorial service for John was held May 18, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home in San Antonio, TX.
